He smites

Mt 9: 9-13

Occasionally, as faithful Christians, we are maliciously criticized, but sometimes also righteously, for our deeds. We can feel frustrated for that. But, as always, we find encouragement in the Gospel, the Good News.

The Lord Jesus dined at the table with sinners. Then, let us notice that the first disciples He called were not the best, He received even a man with a doubtful life to his closest group, the tax collector Mathew who became not only the Apostle, but also one of the four Evangelists. Ultimately, our Lord explained His mercifulness in the declaration: “I came to call sinners.“

Our Church is holy, but this Church on earth consists of sinners. Not one of us is perfect, everyone is a sinner. We are sinners as well as the others. However, in our dedication to the Church, we differ from others. We are sinners, but predetermined for salvation: if we receive the vocation to holiness, we shall obtain salvation.

God already led his Old Testament folk Israel to perfection; in the first reading from Hosea, we have heard: I smote them through the prophets. However, they were still far from ideal when the Lord Jesus comes with the demand: Repent, and believe in the gospel! The Church turns to us with the same urgent requirement.

It is being said that a large stone was brought to Michelangelo with asking him whether he could carve something from it. He inspected it and cried out: “Yet Moses is hidden in this stone.” It took a lot of work with a statue hammer and a chisel, but in time, a real masterpiece became from the stone, Moses in over life size. Many visitors admire this jewel of Renaissance among monuments in Rome.

Similarly as the figure of Moses was in the unformed stone, there is also a new man hidden in us, a saint, just a being as God wants us to be. Our Lord wants to smite us. But our formation requires our cooperation. We must allow the man get out from ourselves, to let ourselves to be carved. It includes the painful giving up of our old life. But though it is painful, it can be joyful, as Mathew left the toll house with joy in his heart.

Such smiting we received from our parents through the education. Further, we have the responsibility to educate ourselves. We have to form ourselves according to both human and Christian aspects.

Everyone has positive as well as negative attributes. We have to develop the positives and abrogate the negatives. The rebukes, regulations and advices from the Sacrament of Penance can help us to do what we are supposed to do with ourselves.

The former tax collector Levi Mathew, let himself be called to a change. May we let ourselves be shaped by the Divine Master so that Christ would be formed in us Christians! Thus the Church here on earth can be radiant by heavenly splendor.

Mt 9: 9-13

Neraz nás ako veriacich kresťanov zlomyseľne kritizujú, ale niekedy aj právom - pre naše skutky. Môžeme sa preto cítiť znechutený. No ako vždy, v evanjeliu, dobrej zvesti, nachádzame útechu.

Pán Ježiš stoloval s hriešnikmi. Potom si všimnime, že tí prví učeníci, ktorých si povolal, neboli najlepší, dokonca do svojej najbližšej skupiny apoštolov prijal človeka s pochybným životom – mýtnika Matúša. A napokon vyhlásil: „Prišiel som volať hriešnikov.“

Cirkev je svätá, lež túto Cirkev tu na zemi tvoria hriešnici. Ani jeden z nás nie je dokonalý, každý sme hriešnik. Sme hriešnici ako iní. Ale predsa sa naším povolaním do Cirkvi líšime od iných. Sme hriešnici, no predurčení k spáse: ak prijmeme povolanie k svätosti, dosiahneme spásu.

Boh viedol k dokonalosti už starozákonný ľud; v prvom čítaní z Ozeáša sme počuli: Okresával som ich skrze prorokov. Ešte však boli stále ďaleko od ideálu, keď prichádza Pán Ježiš s požiadavkou: Kajajte sa a verte evanjeliu! A týmito slovami sa Cirkev obracia na nás.

Hovorí sa, ako raz Michelangelovi priniesli obrovský kus kameňa, pýtajúc sa či by z neho niečo nevytesal. On si ho poobzeral a zvolal: „Veď v tom kameni je ukrytý Mojžiš.“ Vyžadovalo si to však ešte veľa práce so sochárskym dlátom a kladivom, ale  o nejaký čas z kameňa bolo naozaj umelecké dielo – v nadživotnej veľkosti prorok Mojžiš. Mnohí návštevníci dnes medzi pamiatkami Ríma obdivujú tento skvost renesancie.

Podobne ako postava Mojžiša bola ukrytá v neforemnom kameni, aj v nás je ukrytý nový človek, svätec, prave taká bytosť akú z nás chce mať Boh. Náš Pán nás chce okresať! No naše stvárňovanie vyžaduje našu spoluprácu. Musíme však dovoliť nechať tohoto človeka z nás vystúpiť, nechať sa otesať. To zahrňuje bolestné zrieknutie sa starého života. Ale hoci je to bolestné, môže to byť aj radostné, ako Matúš s radosťou v srdci zanechal mýtnicu.

Takým okresávaním bola už výchova prijatá od našich rodičov. Ďalej však máme sami zodpovednosť seba vychovávať. Máme sa formovať tak po stránke ľudskej ako aj kresťanskej.

Každý máme pozitívne i negatívne vlastnosti. To kladné máme rozvinúť a záporné odstraňovať. K poznaniu toho, čo máme so sebou robiť, nám veľmi môže pomôcť napomenutia, usmernenia a  rady zo sviatosti zmierenia.

Niekdajší mýtnik Lévi - Matúš sa dal povolať k zmene. Kiež by sme sa aj my nechali okresať Božským Majstrom, že by v nás kresťanoch bol stvárnený Kristus. Tak bude môcť aj Cirkev tu na zemi žiariť nebeským leskom.
