Lk 24: 13-35
Many books fill the world-market. Among them there are plenty fiction stories, often totally worthless. According to them, “infinite” serials are filmed that are mostly garbage. But we also have another book, the Book of Books, the Bible. The script for this book was given by God Himself who is the very author. The Bible speaks about God and us, referring to our eternal salvation; it is a book of life.
This Sunday, when we hear the Gospel about how the Lord Jesus opened the Emmaus disciples’ understanding of the sense of the Scripture, is so called Biblical Sunday.
The Lord Jesus interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures and that everything that was written in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and Psalms must be fulfilled.
The trinity of the terms “Law”, “Prophets” and “Writings”, the last includes the mentioned Psalms, in Hebrew “Torah“, “Neviim“, “Ketuvim“, covers all books of the Old Testament. Similarly to the Jewish tradition, Christian tradition divides the Old Testament also into three parts: Historical Books, Prophetic Books and Wisdom Books. The complete Old Testament leads to Christ.
When Christ refers to the Old Testament, it is a challenge also for us to pay more attention to it, until we fall in love with what attests Jesus. As Saint Augustine stated that the New Testament is hidden in the Old; the Old is made manifest in the New.
Let us recall Israel Zolli, the Chief Rabbi of the city of Rome in difficult times of the Second World War, who became a Christian. The testimony of the caring love of Pope Pius XII toward the persecuted Jews during the war undoubtedly had a great influence on his conversion, yet he chose as his baptismal name the civil name of the Pope: “Eugenio”. The deepest reason, however, was his belief that the Jewish Scriptures speak about Christ. This discovery had its beginning in something that happened in his childhood. On one visit to his friend’s friend, Israel saw a crucifix. He had never seen one before. When he came home, he asked his parents about this man hanging on a cross. They replied that that is something that concerns Christians, not them. Much later, he read in the prophet Isaiah the songs of the servant of the Lord, in which the purest and most innocent man, beaten, humiliated, and put to death for our sins is presented. Since then he did not get rid of the the nagging question that often sprang to his mind: “'Isn't the crucified man I saw this servant of Yahweh?“ Reading of the Old Testament, especially the Isaiah prediction about the Suffering Servant of the Lord led Him to Christ.
Let us treasure the Holy Scripture that to the language of the Slovak people Saint Cyril and Methodius, missionaries of the Slavs, translated. We need God’s Word for our life. Let us appreciate to listen, read and meditate. Yet God speaks in His Word and also, as once that of the Emmaus disciples, our heart can burn within us by what God had prepared here for us.

Množstvo kníh zaplňuje svetový trh. Mnohé z nich sú vymyslené romány, často úplne bezhodnotné. Podľa nich sú sfilmované nekonečné seriály, ktoré sú zväčša odpadom. Ale máme i inú knihu - Knihu kníh - Bibliu. Scenár pre túto knihu dal sám Boh, ktorý je jej vlastným autorom. Biblia nám hovorí o Bohu a nás, vzhľadom na našu večnú spásu; je to kniha života.
Dnešná nedeľa, keď počúvame evanjelium o tom, ako Pán Ježiš dal emauzským učeníkom pochopiť zmysel Písma, je biblickou nedeľou.
Pán Ježiš hovoril o tom, čo sa na ňom v celom Písme vzťahovalo a že muselo sa splniť všetko, čo je napísané v Mojžišovom zákone, u Prorokov a v žalmoch.
Trojica pojmov “Zákon“, “Proroci“ a “Spisy“, posledné zahŕňa spomenuté žalmy – po hebrejsky: “Tóra“, “Nabim“, “Ketubim“ – pokrýva všetky knihy Starého zákona. Podobne židovskej tradícii kresťanská tradícia tiež delí Starý zákon na tri časti: knihy historické, prorocké a múdroslovné. Na Krista sa teda vzťahuje kompletne celý Starý zákon.
Keď sa Kristus odvoláva na Starý zákon, je to výzva aj pre nás venovať mu viac pozornosti, ba až zamilovať si to, čo svedčí o Ňom. Ako hovorí svätý Augustín: v Starom zákone je ukrytý Nový a Novom sa objavuje Starý.
Pripomeňme si Eugenia Izraela Zolliho - hlavného židovského rabína mesta Ríma v ťažkých časoch Druhej svetovej vojny, ktorý sa stal kresťanom. Veľký vplyv na jeho konverziu malo svedectvo starostlivej lásky Pia XII. k prenasledovaným Židom počas vojny, veď si za krstné meno zvolil civilné meno pápeža “Eugenio”. No najhlbším dôvodom však bolo presvedčenie, že židovské Písma hovoria o Kristovi. Jeho objaveniu Krista predchádzalo čosi, čo sa odohralo v jeho detstve. Na jednej návšteve kamarátovho kamaráta, Izrael videl kríž. Keď prišiel domov, opýtal sa svojich rodičov na toho muža visiaceho na kríži. Oni odpovedali, že to je niečo čo vystihuje kresťanov, nie ich. Omnoho neskôr čítal v prorokovi Iziášovi o služobníkovi Pánovom, v ktorom je predstavený najčistejší, ubitý, ponížený a na smrť odsúdený pre naše hriechy. Od tohoto momentu sa nezbavil doternej otázky, ktorá mu prichádzala na myseľ: „Nie je ten ukrižovaný muž, ktorého som videl, ten služobník Pána?“ Čítanie Starého zákona a osobitne Izaiášove predpovede o trpiacom služobníkovi Pánovom ho priviedlo ku Kristovi.
Vážme si Sväté Písmo, ktoré do reči slovenského ľudu preložili vierozvestcovia - svätí Cyril a Metod. Božie Slovo potrebujeme pre náš život. Radi ho počúvajme, čítajme, rozjímajme. Veď keď Boh hovorí v svojom Slove a ako kedysi emauzským učeníkom aj nám môže horieť srdce radosťou z toho, čo tu Pán pre nás pripravil.
