Deacons

Acts 6:1-7 Jn 14:1-12

In those parishes, where there is no permanent deacon assigned, the faithful are usually very surprised when somebody appears on the pulpit who is not a priest and after his reading of the Gospel, he also preaches sometimes. It refers to a deacon, who can be very young, especially if he is not a permanent deacon but a deacon preparing himself for priesthood. It is said that when a deacon preaches an angel preaches. Although a deacon will not speak to you today, we shall speak about a deacon service.

In the first reading, we have heard about the instituting of deacons for the first Church. It is noteworthy that before the Apostles chose their priestly coworkers as well as future bishops, their successors, they had chosen deacons. For they were chosen by the Apostles for a specific mission, deacons belong to the hierarchy of the Church. The mission to be a deacon is granted by a sacramental act, ordination (in Latin: ordination), by which the priestly power is not asked for them, but the hands are laid on them for service.

Today’s Gospel captures the speech of the Lord Jesus about the many dwelling places in His Father’s house. The deacons, who were formerly instituted to serve at tables in the houses where the first Christians were meeting, through their service of love, they have to support that everyone would feel at home in the Church. Ultimately, they have to witness that we have an eternal dwelling place in our Father’s house in heaven, prepared for us.

Deacon primary service at tables was developed in a short time into a charitable service. The heart of the mission of a deacon is service of love – in Greek: “diakonia”. For what remains, the deacons acted alongside the Apostles and, now, they do alongside the bishop and priests, at announcing of the Word of God and at the Altar.

Two of the first seven deacons are more known to us: Stephan and Philip. Stephan was filling his task in Jerusalem and he was a martyr. Deacon Philip acted in Samaria; he led the minister in charge of all treasures of the Ethiopian queen to faith.

The example of a deacon is Christ. He came to serve, before his departure; he symbolically washed the feet of his disciples. He became a Deacon in the absolute sense, the Servant of all. The men chosen to be deacons are being configured to Him.

The deaconate is known as an intermediate that properly prepares for priesthood, so called transitional “deaconate”. In the Church, there is also a permanent deaconate. I know a doctor, teacher and educator who exercise their service as deacons.

At this time, I would mention my deaconate. A part of it, I spent as an intensive pastoral service in the spa-town of Piestany. But the greater part, I spent with my studies in Bratislava. On Sundays, we were assisting at liturgies in churches of our capital city. In pairs, we were participating in the “meetings” of the Christian youth, with whom we were sharing God’s Word, but also obtaining experiences from them and with them. Some weekends, we were assisting the Sisters of Mother Therese, where we were helping those in need, especially by serving the meals for the homeless. For me, my deaconate was a very nice part of my life, and also, I am confident about a great usefulness of our service.

May our Lord give His Church excellent deacons! But let Him invoke the spirit of love in each of us, the readiness to serve. Then, everybody will feel in the Church as at home and, going the way of salvation, we shall get to the House of our Father in Heaven.

Diakoni

Sk 6:1-7 Jn 14:1-12

No väčšiu časť som strávil popri štúdiu v Bratislave.
