House on the Rock

Mt 9: 9-13

Surely, you have already observed how a house is being built close by. Generally, construction is not started by laying bricks; first, the foundation must be dug. The builders know exactly how important is the foundation for the building. For example, let us mention such an interesting fact that Roman Coliseum foundation is almost 35 feet deep. If the foundation is not sufficiently strong enough, it eventually causes the building to be impaired, cracks shall appear and it may collapse.

The Lord Jesus narrated an interesting parable about a house built on rock and a house on sand. In this parable we have to be similar to the man whose creation remained: Wise man built his house on rock!

Everyone of us is such a building of which, at the same time, he is also its builder. Our foundation is on what we base our life. It can be money, career, sensual experiences etc. Or it is God’s grace which we want to keep at the expense of anything.

What is my foundation? On what do I base my life? Is it rock or sand? In the construction also sand can be utilized, but it has no place in the foundation. Thus already mentioned finances, position in society and pure emotional joy belong to life, but we can not base our life on those perishable things.

When I was a young boy, as children, we were building a castle on the sand in the front yard. I was very proud of the sand castle and I tried to draw the attention of the people who were passing by. In the evening, I had to leave the sand and go home, but I still meditated on what I would add there. Maybe, I was also dreaming about that. You can imagine how great my disappointment was when, in the morning, I found that after a night rainstorm only a stack of sand remained.

We can see how much disappointment there is when we set on something that is not rock, when we rely on what shall appear unstable and lead to a fall. Let us learn from our own mistakes but also from those of others. That would be a very imprudent builder who would not learn from the past, a builder whose buildings would fall one after another and he would continue anew to build improperly.

The negative event from my childhood can make you smile, it was not a tragedy. I wept and, after a couple of days, I built a new one. But our life is more than children’s sand; a human person is more important than sand castle. Because there is the great responsibility: all his eternity depends on how man realizes himself in this world. We do not know how much time the Lord God gives us for building, therefore let us reevaluate today on how we build.

The Lord God as a Good Architect knows what is good for us and gives us the acknowledgement of that; especially He does so through our Church. With faith, we can receive the plans of our Divine Master and thus entrust our life to God’s grace. We can, but are not forced, for we are free to choose His blessing or damnation.

It is offered to us to choose life based on the solid foundation. If we keep ourselves to the Magiterium of the Church that composes first of the Pope, the successor of Peter – the Rock and then of bishops united with him, our struggling shall not be in vain. Opened for what God desires through the Church from us, let us pray to the Lord: ”Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety.“

Dom na skale

Akiste ste už niekde vo vašej blízkosti pozorovali, ako stavajú dom. Spravidla sa stavba nezačína ukladaním tehál; najskôr sa musia vykopať základy. Stavbári dobre vedia ako dôležité sú základy pre budovu. Spomeňme napríklad takú zaujímavú skutočnosť, že rímske Koloseum má až deväť metrov hlboké základy. Ak sú základy nedostatočne pevné, to spôsobuje stavba sa časom poškodzuje, praská, ba mohla by sa aj zrútiť.

Pán Ježiš rozpovedal zaujímavé podobenstvo o dome postavenom na skale a o dome na piesku. V podobenstve sa chceme podobať človeku, ktorého dielo obstálo: Muž múdry postavil dom na skale!

Každý sme akoby takou budovou, ktorej sme zároveň staviteľmi. Našim základom je to, na čom si zakladáme život. Môžu to byť peniaze, kariéra, zmyselné zážitky, ... Alebo je to Božia milosť, ktorú si snažíme zachovať za každú cenu.

Aký je môj základ? Na čom si zakladám život? Je to skala či piesok? Na stavbe sa zúžitkuje aj piesok, ale nemá miesto v základe. K životu patria i spomenuté financie, spoločenské postavenie, čistá citová radosť, ale nemôžeme si v živote zakladať na týtchto pominuteľných veciach.

Keď som bol ešte malý chlapec, ako deti sme si stavali v pieskovisku hrad na priedomí. Bol som na tento pieskový hrad veľmi hrdý, upozorňoval som na neho ľudí, ktorí okolo prechádzali. Večer som už musel opustiť piesok a ísť domov, ale stále som premýšľal, čo tam ešte dobudujem. Hádam sa mi o tom aj snívalo. Môžete si predstaviť, aký som bol však ráno sklamaný, keď po nočnom lejaku z môjho hradu ostala len kopa piesku.

Sami vidíme, koľko je v živote sklamania, keď vsádzame na niečo, čo nie je skala, keď sa spoliehame sa nato, čo sa ukáže ako nestále a vedie k pádu. Poučme sa z chýb iných, aj z vlastných. Bol by nerozumný staviteľ, ktorý by sa nepoučil z minulosti - staviteľ, ktorému by budovy jedna za druhou padali a on by nanovo pokračoval stavať nesprávne.

Negatívna príhoda z môjho detstva je úsmevná, nie je tragédiou. Poplakal som si a niekoľko dní som postavil nový. No náš život je viac ako detské pieskovisko, ľudská osoba dôležitejšia ako pieskový hrad. Veď je tu veľká zodpovednosť: podľa toho ako sa človek realizuje v tomto svete, závisí celá jeho večnosť. Nevieme koľko času nám ešte Pán Boh dáva na budovanie, preto dnes prehodnocujme, ako staviame.

Pán Boh ako Dobrý architekt vie, čo je pre nás dobré a dáva nám to poznať; osobitne tak robí cez svoju Cirkev. S vierou môžeme prijať plány Božského Majstra a tak zveriť svoj život Božej milosti. Môžeme a nemusíme, lebo sme slobodní zvoliť si požehnanie či prekliatie.

Je nám ponúknuté zvoliť si život založený na pevnom základe. Ak sa budeme držať učiteľského úradu Cirkvi, ktorý tvorí najskôr pápež nástupca Petra – Skaly a potom a s ním zjednotení biskupi, naše snaženia nebudú márne. Otvorení pre to, čo si cez Cirkev od nás praje Boh sa modlime k Pánovi: „Buď mi skalou útočišťa, opevneným hradom mojej spásy!“
