The Descent of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:1-11 Jn 14:15-26
The Easter season is being concluded on the 50th day after
Easter by the Solemnity of Pentecost. On this day, we glorify the coming of the Third Divine Person – the Holy Spirit
whom Jesus Christ sent from his Father as a gift. Pentecost is celebrating of our receiving and obtaining
the benefit.
Christian Pentecost has its prefiguring in Jewish celebrations. The day
of Pentecost was joined with the celebration of the concluding of harvest. In

Also we, Christians, are thankful to God for all gifts of the earth, for
God has created all we have here in the world for us, and He has created it
through His Spirit, about whom we read in the Book of Genesis that already in
the beginning a divine wind was sweeping over the waters. We also notice that besides
the earthly gifts we have received even nobler: heavenly gifts. According to the prophesy of Isaiah, our Christian tradition recognizes
seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, knowledge, counsel, fortitude,
understanding, piety, and fear of God. We can see the effect of these gifts on
the Apostles: after receiving the Spirit the Consoler, they were filled with
joy, previously fearful men became audacious announcers and God confirmed their
human words by Divine signs.
In the entire world, in the season around the Solemnity of the Descent
of the Holy Spirit, the sacrament of Confirmation used to be administered. When
the bishop, the successor of the Apostles, by imposing his hand, anoints, it is
not only a sign of privilege and gift, but, in reality, it also causes God’s
election and being enriched by Him. The gift of the Lord is that he leads us by
His Spirit to realize His adventurous plan with every one of us.
I recall especially our confirmandi what is
valid about every one of us who were baptized and confirmed: if God’s operating
does not find an open heart of man, it can not work. To God’s gift is necessary
to know one thing: that we must want to receive this gift. God can not give us
more than we are able to receive. Equally, we can not fill a glass more than
its capacity. Small glass will still contain only a little. Similarly, you can
not fill the glass with what you want when it is already full of something
else.
One more comparison about our
cooperation with grace! Imagine that a director of Tesco would announce that
everybody can come to his store and take gratis home from there as much as fits
into his bag. If we would only have a purse, we could put only a chocolate
stick or a small perfume in it. You could get even more into a regular shopping
bag. But bringing a wardrobe trunk, you could fill with stuff from all the
departments.
God offers such a deal when He
offers cost free graces to those who are keen on it. Through prayer, we can
open ourselves to God’s grace so that God’s power and glory would be revealed
in this world. God wants to fulfill His promise also upon us!
If we receive a gift from
those dear to us for Christmas, Birthday, Names Day, Valentine or Mother’s Day,
even more, we can expect it even more from God this Sunday when celebrating the
Birthday of the Church. In prayer, let us tell our desires to the Lord Jesus,
living and present among us. Before all, let us ask Him for the supernatural
gifts first, for He can not give us such natural gifts that would be a barrier
on our way to heaven. Remember that if you seek first the

Zoslanie Ducha Svätého
Sk 2,1-11 Jn 14, 15-26
Veľkonočné obdobie završuje na 50. deň po Veľkej noci
slávnosť Turíc. V tento deň oslavujeme príchod tretej Božskej
osoby – Ducha Svätého, ktorého nám poslal Ježiš Kristus od svojho Otca ako dar.
Turíce sú teda slávením toho, ako sme boli obdarovaní.
Kresťanské Turíce majú svoj predobraz v židovských sláveniach.
Deň Turíc bol spojený so slávením zavŕšenia žatvy. Žatva vo Svätej
zemi začína Veľkou Nocou, teda už niekoľko týždňov pred
Turícami. Preto sa tento sviatok nazýval Sviatkom týždňov. Bol to tiež
Deň prvotín, keďže sa Bohu obetovali prvotiny úrody. Neskoršie sa
v tento deň u Židov bol slávený nielen ako vďakyvzdanie za dar
úrody, ale aj za nadprirodzený dar súvisiaci s tým, že si ich Boh vyvolil. Po
vyvedení z Egyptského otroctva bývali na púšti pod stanmi, preto Turíce sa
tiež nazývali Sviatok stánkov. Potom na vrchu Sinaj dostali Boží zákon,
preto inakší názov Turíc je Deň vydania Zákona.
Aj my kresťania sme vďační Bohu za všetky dary zeme,
veď všetko, čo tu máme vo svete Boh stvoril pre nás – a tvoril to
svojim Duchom, o ktorom čítame v knihe Genezis, sa už na
začiatku vznášal nad priepasťou. Tiež si však uvedomujeme, že
okrem pozemských darov sa nám tiež dostali ešte vznešenejšie - nebeské dary. Naša
kresťanská tradícia podľa Izaiášovho proroctva rozoznáva sedem
nadprirodzených darov Ducha Svätého: dar múdrosti, dar rozumu, dar sily, dar
rady, dar poznania, dar nábožnosti a dar bázne Božej. Ich účinok vidíme na
apoštoloch: po prijatí Ducha Potešiteľa ich naplnila radosť,
bojazliví sa stali horlivými ohlasovateľmi a Boh ich ľudské slová
potvrdzoval Božskými znameniami.
Na celom svete sa v období okolo slávnosti Zoslania Ducha Svätého
zvykne vysluhovať sviatosť birmovania. Keď biskup – nástupca
apoštolov vložením ruky pomazáva, to nielen naznačuje vyznačenie
a dar, ale spôsobuje skutočné Božie vyvolenie a obdarovanie. Tento
dar Pána je jeho vedenie jeho Duchom aby s každým uskutočnil svoj
dobrodružný plán.
Pripomínam osobitne naším birmovancom to, čo platí o každom
z nás, ktorí sme boli pokrstení a pobirmovaní: ak Božie pôsobenie
nenachádza otvorené srdce človeka, nemôže účinkovať. K Božiemu
daru je potrebné vedieť jedno: totiž že tento dar musíme chcieť
prijať. Boh nám nemôže viac darovať ako sme my schopný prijať.
Podobne ako pohár nemôžete naplniť viac ako je jeho obsah. A malý
pohár bude vždy obsahovať málo. A takisto ho už nemôžete naplniť
čím chcete, keď je už plný iného.
Ešte jedno prirovnanie
o našej spolupráci s milosťou. Predstavte si, že by
riaditeľ Tesca vyhlásil, že každý môže prísť do jeho obchodu a toľko
si zadarmo odniesť domov, koľko sa mu zmestí do tašky. Ak by sme mali
len kabelku, tam by sa zmestila čokoládová tyčinka alebo malý parfum.
Do bežnej nákupnej tašky sa vám toho vošlo podstatne viac. No lodný kufor by
ste mohli naplniť tovarom zo všetkých oddelení.
Takúto akciu ponúka Boh, keď
dáva zdarma milosti tým, ktorí o to stoja. Modlitbou sa môžeme otvárať
Božej milosti, že by sa zjavila Božia moc a sláva v tomto svete. Boh
chce aj na nás naplniť svoj prísľub!
Ak od svojich drahých dostávame
darček na Vianoce, na narodeniny, meniny, Valentína či Deň
matiek, o to viac ho môžeme
čakať v dnešnú nedeľu od Bohu, keď slávime narodeniny
Cirkvi. Vyslovme v modlitbe svoje
priania Pánu Ježišovi, živému a prítomnému medzi nami. Prosme však
predovšetkým o nadprirodzené dary, lebo tie prirodzené dary nám nemôže
dať, ak by sa nám mali stať príťažou na ceste do neba. Pamätajte,
že ak hľadáte Božie kráľovstvo, ostatné (čo potrebuje)
vám bude pridané.
Prajem vám, aby ste zo Slávnosti
Zoslania Ducha Svätého obsiali čo najviac milostí a tak zažili
“v práci poľahčenie, v sparne ovlaženie, v plači
potešenie“. „Veni Creator Spiritus“ – „Príď Duchu Svätý, naplň srdcia svojich verných
a zapáľ v nás oheň svojej lásky!“
