FAQs for
Sharks Baseball/Softball
How much does it cost to play?
- In 2008, we expect to keep registration fees the same
as last year: $60 for the first child, $40 for each additional child with a
$20 per child uniform deposit refundable at the end of the season with
return of the jersey and pants.
What are the expectations of the players?
- To listen to their coaches, show respect to their
coaches and teammates, attend all games and practices where possible and let
coaches know when they cannot attend, help with fundraising as age permits,
learn and enjoy playing baseball/softball in an environment where Jesus is
always present and we play and improve our skills for the greater glory of
God.
What are the expectations of the parents?
- Support players and coaches, get your children to
practices and games on time and help with one or more of the following:
coaching, fundraising, field prep, concession stand.
When do we start play, how many games and for how long?
- The 2008 CYO season will start two weeks after Easter
weekend, April 5/6, and go until mid May. Typically, teams play a 10 game
schedule plus/minus 1-2 games, with most games on weekends.
What about practices?
- Generally, we try to start indoor Saturday practices
in March before the weather breaks and then move practices outside in
April. Once the season starts, most teams practice once or twice a week on
weekday evenings. Practice schedules will be set by individual team
coaches, who should be consulted about the particular times and dates team
practices will be held. Players are encouraged to attend as many practices
as possible as this will help them improve and make playing the game more
enjoyable.
What about playing time?
- At the junior varsity level (5th and 6th),
every effort is made to ensure equal playing time. At the varsity level (7th
and 8th grade), playing time can vary at the discretion of the
team coach. For both levels, if a child shows up for a game, he or she
will generally get to play some amount of innings. If you have additional
questions about playing time, you should consult your son/daughter’s team’s
head coach. In general, commitment to the team in the form of regular
attendance at practice and games, positive attitude, and hustle while on the
field will translate into more playing time than just being a player with a
lot of ability.
Does my child need to have experience in baseball/softball
to play?
- While prior experience helps, it is not required to
participate. More important than experience is desire to play and improve
during the season.
What are the ages that can play?
- CYO sports are for 5th through 8th
graders. Exceptions can be made, but please consult the Athletic Director
before signing up a child not in this age range.
Can my child play if we do not attend Ss. Cyril and
Methodius?
- The Sharks welcome players from other parishes that do
not have a CYO program. Please see the Athletic Director for appropriate
waiver forms.
